When extensions are the right choice
- The free edge keeps breaking before the colour has a chance to chip.
- Nails bend when pressed and the gel cracks with them.
- A longer almond or square shape is wanted and the natural nail cannot hold it yet.
- A special date is coming and the nails need to look finished now, not in three months.
How it is done
- A full dry manicure first, so the gel sits at the base of the nail.
- Gel is built on a form, with an apex over the stress point of the nail, then cured and shaped. No glued tips, no acrylic.
- Colour, French or chrome goes over the structure.
- At the fill, the grown-out part is rebuilt and the colour changed. The set is only removed when the natural nail is strong enough to go without it.
Full set or fill
- A full set is the first visit or a fresh start after removal: about two and a half hours.
- A fill is every visit after that, about two hours. Most clients fill every three to four weeks.
- A broken nail between visits is a repair, fifteen minutes, no need to redo the set.
Questions people ask
How long does the gel last?
Most clients come back every three to four weeks and the set still looks fine when they do. Toes last longer, often four to six weeks. Gel extensions are filled every three to four weeks rather than removed.
Is builder gel the same as extensions?
Builder gel is the material; extensions are what it builds. A thin layer of builder gel over the natural nail adds strength without length. A full set adds length on a form. Both are filled, not removed, at the next visit. Ask when booking which one suits the current length and condition of the nails.
Do I need to remove my old gel before I come?
No. Removal is done in the studio with a file, which is gentler than soaking in acetone. Gel polish removal is $20 on hands and $15 on toes; hard gel or extensions from another salon are $25 to remove. Book it together with the new service.
How are the tools cleaned?
Metal tools and e-file bits are cleaned, disinfected and sterilized after every client. Files and buffers that cannot be sterilized are not reused between clients. The studio is a private room, so nothing is shared with other technicians.
